What are RAM configurations?

A RAM configuration is the number of connections your CPU has to memory, such as single-channel being one connection or quad-channel being four. The memory you can use for your PC is dictated by your motherboard. Smaller motherboards, such as Mini-ITX models, simply do not have the space available for multiple DIMM slots and, as such, offer two. Meanwhile, an ATX motherboard has a larger size and can facilitate more DIMM slots, with most offering four. Although they have a different number of ports, these two types of motherboards are still generally configured for dual-channel configurations.

The largest motherboards, such as E-ATX motherboards, can accommodate even more DIMM slots. In fact, most support quad- and even octo-channel RAM configurations.

In general, the larger the configuration of your memory, the better performance your computer will be able to achieve. For example, a PC equipped with a single 16GM stick of RAM will be outperformed by one featuring two 8GB modules in a dual-channel configuration. For gaming, web browsing, and office work, a dual-channel configuration will provide excellent results. However, if you wish to use your computer for more complex tasks, such as video editing or 3D modelling, a quad- or octo-channel configuration is necessary.
